Whether you have already had a gastric bypass or are considering having it done to better your health, you need to know what you can eat. Your diet after gastric bypass surgery will change a lot at first but will stabilize within a few months. The reason for this is because your bariatric nutrition will probably be split into four phases of dieting. Let’s take a quick look at these phases.

Phases I and II of Your Diet After Gastric Bypass Surgery

The first phase of your diet after gastric bypass surgery will usually consist of a single meal of clear fluids. Your doctor will have you sip on some water or something similar in order to see how you are feeling. Don’t try to be tough. If water causes even the slightest discomfort, let your doctor know.

If you can handle the clear fluids well enough, you are ready to move on to the second phase. This phase will be a semi-fluid diet of pureed foods and will last for several weeks. Why a puree?

Because your stomach will still be healing and this sort of food will be easiest to digest. This will also be the phase when your doctor may have you start taking gastric bypass supplements, like bariatric vitamins and calcium chelate.

It’s kind of exciting because each meal will be like a milk shake, but it will be normal meals blended into apple sauce like consistency. Protein will be a big part of this phase because protein will help your stomach heal. Protein will also help prevent hair loss and weight gain.

Phases III and IV of Your Diet After Gastric Bypass Surgery

When your doctor feels that you’re ready, you will be moved onto semi-solid foods. This is phase three of your diet after gastric bypass surgery. All of your food will need to be soft. Nothing tough, chewy, gummy, stringy, fibrous, or seedy.

Your stomach will still be healing so you need to be careful. Even raw veggies, like a salad, will be too much for you yet. This is a critical phase where you really need to watch what you eat, so be sure to talk extensively and clearly with your doctor about what foods are allowed.

Phase IV is very exciting because you will finally be back on solid foods. You will still need to take your bariatric vitamins and calcium chelate though. You will also need to avoid fatty and fried foods as well as anything sugary. Your portions and options should also be in line with your prescribed diet, and there will still be many delicious options for you.

Your diet after gastric bypass surgery may sound complicated, but it’s actually much easier than most of us imagined!

This is great news – you have added years to your life and have raised the quality of your life. You look great and feel better than you have in years.

If you want to maintain this feeling, you need to adjust your bariatric diet to reflect your new lifestyle.

A Weight Loss Diet that Still Offers Proper Nutrients

You may be confused over what to do or how to stay on your bariatric diet. There are hundreds of weight loss diets on the market; even the government’s food pyramid gives guidelines for healthy eating.

A good bariatric diet distinguishes itself from the rest by being medically proven with thousands of first-hand accounts of success. People reliably use this diet after gastric bypass surgery in order to support their body’s new changes and continue the road to their success.

Protein is the cornerstone of this type of diet. More than half of each meal you eat daily will be composed of some sort of lean protein. You should strive for 60 grams each day which can be derived from animal, dairy, or plant proteins.

How Sugar can Harm Your Diet

You will also need to keep carbs at a minimum. This is because of the way the body metabolizes carbohydrates into sugar. Sugar wreaks havoc on your system by making your blood sugar spike erratically, then plummet.

This sudden surge in your blood sugar levels causes the body to go into hunger mode which most people feed with more carbs. This vicious cycle packs on extra calories that, left unburned, turn to fat.

Maintaining a caloric deficit will help you sustain a healthy weight while shedding unhealthy fat. Cutting out sugar and drinking plenty of pure water round out the diet and make for a healthy lifestyle. Even if you don’t have the surgery, you can benefit from going on this type of diet.

Gastric Bypass Vitamins – the Final Ingredient of Weight Loss Nutrition

How do you make sure you’re getting the necessary vitamins when you’re cutting back so much on your food? That’s another secret that gastric bypass patients have. What’s the secret? Gastric bypass vitamins. In fact, that’s what this blog is all about!

Also known as bariatric vitamins, these supplements see to it that your body gets the nutrition it needs–even when you’ve cut way back on the calories. Taking a good bariatric multi vitamin with no fillers or additives should give you the added nutrition you need.

Summer will officially arrive on Monday. There’s nothing better than a fresh and cold salad to add to your summer menus. This tasty salad will get your summer started with a bang.

2 large apples (red, green, or one of each) cut into slices or cubes

2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

2 Cups carrots grated

1 cup shredded cabbage

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 tsp sugar

1/2 tsp freshly grated black pepper

2 oz low fat feta cheese (can substitute other low fat cheese)

Place the apples in a bowl, add the lemon juice and toss together. Add the carrots, cabbage, olive oil, sugar, pepper and cheese.

Serves 6 as a side dish.

Celebrate the arrival of summer with new bariatric recipes and dishes and some planned activities. Swimming is one of the best exercises. Pools are open now so dive in and do some swimming. Look for aquatics classes too – you’ll be surprised the work out you will get. It’s easy on your joints too!

Even though you are eating healthy and trying new recipes you still need to take your bariatric vitamins and supplements. Be sure to be taking ones with no fillers or additives. Since it is more difficult for you to absorb nutrients you want to make sure there are no “extra” ingredients. If there is anything listed in the ingredients besides the vitamins and supplements it is not the product for you.

If you have any recipes you have tried that you think others might want to try please contact me at tina@vita4life.net. We love to share the goodness with others.
